What Does a Freelance Videographer Do, Anyway? A Day in the Life of a Video Pro
Ever wondered what goes into creating a professional video? You see the polished final product online or on a TV screen, but what happens behind the scenes? A lot, as it turns out! Here at Grozzy Productions, we're passionate about video, and while the term "freelance videographer" often brings to mind a single person with a camera, the reality is a little more complex. It's a role that combines artistry, technical skill, and a lot of planning.
To give you a better idea of the effort and expertise that goes into every production, here’s a look at what a typical day of a video professional at Grozzy Productions might look like.
5:00 AM: Pre-Production Check
The day often starts long before the sun is up. We’re in pre-production mode, which means we’re reviewing the shoot schedule, packing our equipment, and making sure everything is in perfect working order. This is a critical step to ensure a smooth day. We check batteries, memory cards, and make a final list of all the gear needed for the day’s specific project, whether it's a corporate interview or a fast-paced event shoot.
6:30 AM: On-Location Arrival
Arriving on-site early is essential. This gives us time to scout the location one last time, even if we've done a pre-shoot recon. We look at the way the light hits a room at a certain time of day, identify any potential audio challenges, and figure out the best angles to tell the story. This is also when we'll set up our professional-grade lighting and audio equipment to ensure we get the best possible quality from the get-go.
8:00 AM: The Shoot Begins
Once our clients or talent arrive, it’s time to start. This is where the creative work comes alive. A good videographer isn’t just pointing a camera; we are actively directing, coaching, and collaborating with our clients. We guide them through interviews, provide feedback on their on-screen presence, and make sure we’re capturing every key moment with the right camera settings and composition. We might be filming corporate headshots in one part of the office and then a testimonial interview in another, all while maintaining a consistent visual style.
1:00 PM: Lunch Break & Data Backup
Mid-day is a good time for a quick break and a crucial step: backing up the footage. We don't wait until the end of the day to do this. We transfer all the morning's footage to multiple hard drives to ensure no data is lost. This is a non-negotiable part of our process. It's about professional reliability and protecting the content we've worked hard to create.
2:00 PM: The Afternoon Shoot
The afternoon is often filled with capturing b-roll—that’s the supplementary footage that helps tell the story. This could be shots of a company’s team collaborating, a product in use, or the bustling atmosphere of an event. This creative process requires a keen eye for detail and the ability to find compelling visuals that will elevate the final video.
5:00 PM: Wrap-Up & Gear Pack Down
Once the shoot is complete, we meticulously pack away all our equipment. We do a final sweep of the location to ensure we've left nothing behind. It's a detail-oriented process that ensures everything is ready for the next day, and we've left the client's space exactly as we found it.
6:00 PM: Post-Production Begins
Even though the shooting is done, the day isn’t over. We head back to our editing suite to begin the post-production process. This involves organising the footage, creating an initial rough cut, and preparing for the detailed work of editing, sound design, and colour grading that will bring the video to life.
